Anglo-French Marriage in Edith Wharton’s Novels

 Abstract：Anglo-French Marriage is often employed as an international theme in Edith Wharton’s novels, particularly in The Custom of the Country. This essay aims to examine the parties concerned in such a marriage in the background of family, as well as the social factors which has an influence on the union and the divorce. A sketch line is provided at the end to summarise the path of Anglo-French marriage in Wharton’s stories.

 摘    要 美法婚姻是伊迪丝·华顿的小说中经常用到的一个国际性主题，特别是在她的著作《国家风俗》中。本文旨在结合美、法两国不同的家庭背景，验视这样一桩婚姻中涉及到的各方，同时分析对联姻和离婚具有影响的各种社会因素。最后，本文根据华顿小说中的美法婚姻历程归结出一条故事发展的总线。
