Abstract

 Idioms, as a special form of language, exist in culture and reflect cultural differences. They have fixed patterns and abundant connotations. Metaphors in idioms are extremely difficult for translators and English learners to comprehend because of the culture embodied in them. Therefore, how to properly do intercultural translation turns out to be an indispensable skill. In this thesis, the translation of metaphors in idioms will be discussed on the foundation of introducing the definition, features, similarities and differences of metaphors in idioms. Meanwhile, a series of principles and methods of idiom translation will be put forward.

 Thesis Statement: Metaphors lie deep in different language cultural backgrounds, and better translation of them is based on well understanding of any two cultures involved. This thesis aims to compare and analyze the cultural differences between English and Chinese languages within the context of metaphor translation, and to give both learners and translators some useful suggestions regarding how metaphors could be better translated.
